  1. Any of a family (Retroviridae) of viruses
  2. containing the genetic material RNA rather
  3. than the more usual DNA. For the virus to
  4. express itself and multiply within an
  5. infected cell, its RNA must be converted to
  6. DNA. It does this by using a built-in enzyme
  7. known as reverse transcriptase (since the
  8. transfer of genetic information from DNA to
  9. RNA is known as transcription, and
  10. retroviruses do the reverse of this).
  11. Retroviruses include those causing AIDS and
  12. some forms of leukemia. See immunity.
